Opening up New Space with BK Community

From the very beginning of our company we've taken the notion that Berrett-Koehler is a community seriously. We've always looked for ways to build that community, to connect with those who feel a connection to us, and to connect members of our community with each other. It turns out this Internet thing is just the ticket!

Over the years we've gradually added features to our main website to make it more interactive, but it just wasn't enough. We didn't want community-building to be an add-on, we wanted it front and center. But there wasn't enough room on one web site, so we created a new one: BK Community.

Officially launching TODAY (June 10th), BK Community is a virtual meeting place, our own social networking site. There are all kinds of ways to interact with your fellow BKers. You can join ongoing conversations or start one of your own. You can join or form topical groups. Members can share photos and videos, blog, announce and register for upcoming events. There are polls and surveys you can participate in, a place you can add links to your favorite apps, and even a map showing where the members of the BK Global community live and read books!

It's all happening at BK Community. We encourage you to get in there and get networking! The site represents an unprecedented opportunity for you to converse with your favorite authors, ask questions of BK staff, find out what other people think of the BK books you like so much. It's a way to break down the old barriers between readers, writers, and publishing company staff.

Enjoy!

Two BK Titles Receive Best Business Book Awards

Library Journal, the oldest and most respected publication covering the library field, just released their list of 2009's Best Business Books, and we are pleased to report that two Berrett-Koehler titles made the cut!

Henry Mintzberg's Managing received an award in the Organizational Dynamics category, while Linda Tarr-Whelan's Women Lead the Way stood out in Success/Personal Performance. Of the latter title, Library Journal says, "Of the many books by and about women in business published in 2009, Tarr-Whelan's offers the most concrete suggestions both for achieving success and working to change organizational and societal norms to aid other women."

Unequal Protection Examines Corporate Personhood

If you're like most people you were shocked recently when the Supreme Count struck down limits on corporate campaign donations. The rationale of the five justice majority was that corporations are essentially people with the same free speech rights as you or me.

Do you feel like there's no real difference between you and a multi-billion dollar global entity? How did an idea that seems so obviously ridiculous and unjust on the face of it become the law of the land?

This is precisely the question Thom Hartmann addresses in his book Unequal Protection. Hartmann, America's most popular progressive radio host, goes deeply into the astonishing historical roots of corporate personhood. Among other things, he reveals that this doctrine originated not in a Supreme Court decision but in an offhand remark by a justice that became the basis for truly sweeping changes. And he tells us what we can do to end this travesty.
